There can be some minor variations between the formatting found in e-sword as over-against the formatting found in the print editions. For instance, LORD in e-sword might be Lord in a Bible in book form.

Grade levels came from several different websites. I did not average them but took the grade level most often cited; except with the NKJV, where 2 or 3 rated it 8^th grade level and I took one person who believed it to be a 9^th grade level work.

The subjective pronouncements are just that, coming directly from me.

Distinctives and miscellaneous notes:

The Context Group Version has fixed/smaller text in e-sword (9–10).

The ISV has some good clarifying footnotes/notes (in bracketed smaller blue text in e-sword).

The Modern Literal Version has fixed/smaller text in e-sword (9–10).

The Niobi Study Bible has parenthetical text in blue to expand on the translation or to give alternative understandings for words and phrases. When a verse acts as a heading or title, it is bolded in brown. All of the meanings of the colors are given under Bible information in e-sword.

The Scriptures 1998: Hebrew letters for some references to God and Jesus; diacritical markings on most proper nouns. There is no letter j in the Hebrew or Greek, so the names we are used to seeing a j with are transliterated more accurately. Jacob is Yaʽaqo; Judah is Yehuah. Sometimes their approach to proper nouns and sentence structure can make the text difficult to read. Matt. 2:1–2 And יהושע having been born in Bĕyth Leḥem of Yehuah in the days of Herodes the sovereign, see, Magi from the East came to Yerushalayim, saying, “Where is He who has been born Sovereign of the Yehuim? For we saw His star in the East and have come to do reverence to Him.” Matt. 4:7 יהושע said to him, “It has also been written, ‘You shall not try יהוה your Elohim.’ ”¹ Footnote: ¹Dt. 6:16. יהושע is Jesus; יהוי is Y^ehowah (Jehovah).

Some examples:

I have continued with my tradition of blue for OT and red for NT for Bibles with minimal formatting. However, there was too much going on to allow for that in the ISV and Niobi Study Bible; each needed to begin in the basic black.

I have inserted the footnotes; online, on sites like Gateway, the footnotes looks like footnotes and often you may hide the footnotes as one of the viewing options. The notes are, however, found within the text itself in e-sword’s ISV* and the Niobi Study Bible, looking much as you see them below.

Title and section titles have been retained. Sometimes there are titles not found in e-sword (the ESV has titles, but not in e-sword).

Of the versions and translations listed, the NKJV is the most meticulous about using italics to indicates words and phrases which are not actually found in the Greek or Hebrew. The NASB does this as well, but not as often.

The CSB, NASB, NIV, NKJV, and the NLT were taken from the gateway website; the others came out of e-sword, version 9–10.

Genesis 1:1–2

Like a young plant or a root that sprouts in dry ground, the servant grew up obeying the LORD. He wasn't some handsome king. Nothing about the way he looked made him attractive to us.

He was hated and rejected; his life was filled with sorrow and terrible suffering. No one wanted to look at him. We despised him and said, "He is a nobody!"

He suffered and endured great pain for us, but we thought his suffering was punishment from God.

He was wounded and crushed because of our sins; by taking our punishment, he made us completely well.

While God watches, his servant will grow up fragile like a very young tree, like a weak young plant that shoots up, a stem that is growing in dry ground. There will be nothing beautiful or majestic about him, nothing that would cause us to want to look at him.

People will despise and reject him. He will endure much pain, and he will suffer much. Because his face will be very disfigured, people will not want to look at him; he will not even look human any more; people will despise him and think that he is not worth paying any attention to.

But he will be punished for the sicknesses within our lives; he will endure great pain for us. But we will think that he is being punished by God, afflicted for his own sins.

When King Herod heard this, he was deeply disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.

Jesus replied: In your Scriptures doesn't God say, "You are gods"? You can't argue with the Scriptures, and God spoke to those people and called them gods. So why do you accuse me of a terrible sin for saying that I am the Son of God? After all, it is the Father who prepared me for this work. He is also the one who sent me into the world. If I don't do as my Father does, you should not believe me. But if I do what my Father does, you should believe because of that, even if you don't have faith in me. As a result, people are without excuse. ²¹ For though they knew God, they did not glorify him as God or show gratitude. Instead, their thinking became worthless, and their senseless hearts were darkened. ²² Claiming to be wise, they became fools ²³ and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man, birds, four-footed animals, and reptiles.

²⁴ Therefore God delivered them over in the desires of their hearts to sexual impurity, so that their bodies were degraded among themselves. ²⁵ They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served what has been created instead of the Creator, who is praised forever. Amen.

Contemporary English V.       The good news tells how God accepts everyone who has faith, but only those who have faith. It is just as the Scriptures say, "The people God accepts because of their faith will live." From heaven God shows how angry he is with all the wicked and evil things that sinful people do to crush the truth. They know everything that can be known about God, because God has shown it all to them. God's eternal power and character cannot be seen. But from the beginning of creation, God has shown what these are like by all he has made. That's why those people don't have any excuse. They know about God, but they don't honor him or even thank him. Their thoughts are useless, and their stupid minds are in the dark. They claim to be wise, but they are fools. They don't worship the glorious and eternal God. Instead, they worship idols that are made to look like humans who cannot live forever, and like birds, animals, and reptiles. So God let these people go their own way. They did what they wanted to do, and their filthy thoughts made them do shameful things with their bodies. They gave up the truth about God for a lie, and they worshiped God's creation instead of God, who will be praised forever. Amen.

Good News Bible                   For the gospel reveals how God puts people right with himself: it is through faith from beginning to end. As the scripture says, "The person who is put right with God through faith shall live." Ever since God created the world, his invisible qualities, both his eternal power and his divine nature, have been clearly seen; they are perceived in the things that God has made. So those people have no excuse at all! They know God, but they do not give him the honor that belongs to him, nor do they thank him. Instead, their thoughts have become complete nonsense, and their empty minds are filled with darkness. They say they are wise, but they are fools; instead of worshiping the immortal God, they worship images made to look like mortals or birds or animals or reptiles. And so God has given those people over to do the filthy things their hearts desire, and they do shameful things with each other. They exchange the truth about God for a lie; they worship and serve what God has created instead of the Creator himself, who is to be praised forever! Amen.

God's Word                            God's approval is revealed in this Good News. This approval begins and ends with faith as Scripture says, "The person who has God's approval will live by faith." God's anger is revealed from heaven against every ungodly and immoral thing people do as they try to suppress the truth by their immoral living. What can be known about God is clear to them because he has made it clear to them. From the creation of the world, God's invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly observed in what he made. As a result, people have no excuse. They knew God but did not praise and thank him for being God. Instead, their thoughts were pointless, and their misguided minds were plunged into darkness. While claiming to be wise, they became fools. They exchanged the glory of the immortal God for statues that looked like mortal humans, birds, animals, and snakes. For this reason God allowed their lusts to control them. As a result, they dishonor their bodies by sexual perversion with each other. These people have exchanged God's truth for a lie. So they have become ungodly and serve what is created rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen!

God’s Wrath against Sinful Humanity

God’s wrath is being revealed from heaven against all the ungodliness and wickedness of those who in their wickedness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God himself has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s ^{[Lit. his]} invisible attributes—his eternal power and divine nature—have been understood and observed by what he made, so that people ^{[Lit. they]} are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him. God’s Anger at Sin

Unlocked Dynamic Bible        By means of this good news Yahweh reveals how he puts people right with himself. This is like what a prophet wrote long ago in the scriptures: “Those whom Yahweh puts right with himself will live because they trust him.”

Yahweh in heaven makes it clear that he is angry with all who show no respect for him and who do wicked things. He shows them that they deserve for him to punish them. Because they do wicked things, they also keep other people from knowing what is true about Yahweh. All non-Jews can clearly know what Yahweh is like, because Yahweh himself has revealed this to everyone. People cannot actually see with their eyes what Yahweh is like. But ever since he created the world, the things in it make us understand things about him, for example, he has always been able to do powerful things. Another example is that everyone knows that he is completely different from all that he has created. So no one is able to say truthfully, “We never knew about Yahweh.” Although non-Jews knew what Yahweh is like, they did not honor him as Yahweh, nor did they thank him for what he had done. But instead, they began to think foolish things about him, and they were no longer able to understand what he wanted them to know about himself. Although they claimed that they were wise, they became foolish, and they refused to admit that Yahweh is glorious and will never die. Instead, they made and worshiped idols that resembled people who will some day die, and then they made other idols that resembled birds and four-footed animals, and finally they made idols that resembled reptiles. So Yahweh allowed the non-Jews to do immoral sexual things that they strongly desired, things that they thought they had to do, because they wanted so much to do them. As a result, they began to dishonor each other’s bodies by their sexual actions. Also, they chose to worship false gods instead of admitting what is true about Yahweh. They worshiped things that Yahweh created instead of worshiping him, the one who created everything, the one whom we should all praise forever! Amen.
