If you have not, then you need to heed the words of our Lord, Who said, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten [or, uniquely-born] Son, so that every [one] believing [or, trusting] in Him shall not perish, but shall be have eternal life! For God did not send His Son into the world so that He should judge the world, but so that the world shall be saved through Him. The one believing [or, trusting] in Him is not judged, but the one not believing has already been judged, because he has not believed in the Name of the only-begotten [or, uniquely-born] Son of God.” (John 3:16–18). “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life! No one comes to the Father except through [or, by means of] Me!” (John 14:6).

These exegetical studies are not designed for you to read each and every word. For instance, the Greek exegesis is put into lightly colored tables, so that if you want to skip over them, that is fine. If you question a translation, you can always refer back to the appropriate Greek tables to sort it all out. These tables provide all of the words their meanings and morphology for each and every verse. The intent is to make this particular study the most complete and most accurate examination of 2Thessalonians 1 which is available in writing. The idea is to make every phrase, verse and passage understandable and to make correct application of all that is studied.

 

Besides teaching you the doctrinal principles related to this chapter, this commentary is also to help bring this narrative to life, so that you can understand the various characters, their motivations, and the choices that they make. Ideally, you will be able to visualize the peoples, their temporal and spiritual leaders, and their armies as they move across the landscape of the Land of Promise. I hope to provide not only an accurate exegesis of the chapter in view, but to also quote many of the great insights that past commentators have offered us.

 

Although the bulk of this chapter is based upon narrative from the book of 2Thessalonians, I will make every attempt possible to provide enough historical information and theological context so that you will have a sufficient background to understand what is going on.


Preface: Paul greets the Thessalonians, speaks of his prayers for them; and gives them somewhat of a preview of eschatology, the primary topic of this letter.

 

Bible Summary: Paul, Silvanus and Timothy, to the Thessalonians. We boast of your faith through persecution. The Lord Jesus will appear in vengeance.

Definition of Terms

Rebound (Restoration to fellowship with God)

In the New Testament, this is naming your sins to God, so that you are both restored to temporal fellowship with God and are then filled with the Spirit of God. In the Old Testament, naming your sins to God would result in a restoration of fellowship and, in some cases, the empowerment of the Holy Spirit once again (the Holy Spirit was not given to all Old Testament believers). An Introduction to 2Thessalonians 1


I ntroduction: 2Thessalonians was written a few months after 1Thessalonians. Although Paul that he cleared up some eschatology issues in the previous epistle, he seemed to raise more questions than he answered. In this first chapter, we have the normal greetings and the indication that Team Paul is praying for the Thessalonians. However, through a considerable portion of this chapter, Paul lays out the schedule for the rapture and the 2nd advent. I don’t think that it was his original intention to do this; I think that this subject was so much on his mind that, it just seeped out in his greeting to the Thessalonians.

Changes—additions and subtractions:

 

For a very short time, I tested the Hebrew Names Version (which is equivalent to the World English Bible—Messianic Edition). It really did not provide any alternate approach beyond the translations I was using, so I stopped using it partway through this chapter. Similarly, I decided to stop referencing the Numeric New Testament.

 

I added in the Brief Overview with chapter 20, and will go back and place that into every chapter.

 

I continue to avoid using corrections or clarifications in the literal translation, preferring instead to insert words which are not there in order to coincide with good English sense. So, instead of they came to..., I might instead write, [Paul and Silas] came to... In the past, I would have written, they [that is, Paul and Silas] came to... I believe that this provides a better flow for the reader.

 

I continue to place my nearly literal translation at the end of each verse and at the end of each passage. My paraphrase will also be placed at the end of every passage.

 

I drew from hundreds of sources for this chapter. I literally stand on the shoulders of thousands of men in order to put this document together.

As always, 3 separate translations will be produced for each verse. The slavishly literal translation attempts to preserve word order and number, making it more literal than Young’s translation (however, I do not preserve the consistency of the translation that Young does). The moderately literal translation may add or delete a definite article, change the number of a noun to correspond with the English sense of thinking, and the order is often changed in order to better represent our English sentence structure. The paraphrase is an attempt to give a thought-for-thought interpretation of what each verse tells us.

Ancient texts:                       I will use the Westcott-Hort Greek text as the basis for my English translation. I use that test primarily because e-sword has a nice module by Rob Wolfram which has the interlinear English text, Strong’s #’s, and the Greek morphology. The e-sword tab is IWH+P. I do not use their English text for my translation. Also, throughout, I take in consideration alternate readings.

 

As a young Christian, I was quite interested in the alternative readings. After many decades of study, I have found that, as with the Hebrew text, disputed readings rarely have any affect on the interpretation of a text (apart from perhaps a half-dozen fairly well-known alternate readings, like the end of the book of Mark).

 

I will compare the Greek text to English translations of the Latin and Syriac (= Aramaic) texts, using the Douay-Rheims translation and George Lamsa’s translation from the Syriac. I often update these texts with non-substantive changes (e.g., you for thou, etc.).

 

In general, the Latin text is an outstanding translation from the Hebrew text into Latin and very trustworthy (I say this as a non-Catholic). Unfortunately, I do not read Latin—apart from some very obvious words—so I am dependent upon the English translation of the Latin (principally, the Douay-Rheims translation).

 

The Septuagint and the Dead Sea Scrolls are irrelevant, as they preceded the writing of the New Testament by over 200 years.

(1) Paul gives recognition to the junior members of the team.

(2) The first image that the term ‘church’ evokes in the minds of many is that of a building; what is in view here is a group of people.

(3) To the ‘western’ mind the repetition of the full form, “God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,” may seem unnecessary, if not stylistically poor, but this letter was written by a Hebrew.

We have this second letter to the Thessalonians coming from the same three people: Paul, Silvanus and Timothy, as was the first letter.


This is Paul’s missionary team for the second missionary tour.


The general consensus is, this latter arrived months, not years, later. This would be reasonable as, the Thessalonians would know where the first letter came from; and Paul’s letter may not have answered all of their questions (or, perhaps it raised new ones). So, after reading that letter, after explaining it, it did not fully answer the questions which they had.

The Thessalonians, like us, are in God because we are in Christ Jesus. At the moment of exhaling faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit places us into Christ, which is a position (the phrase in Christ occurs nearly 90 times in the New Testament).


This is our position which testifies to the eternal nature of our relationship to God.


To us today, saying Jesus Christ, those two proper names together, seems to us that we are simply giving the full name of Jesus, His first and last name. Jesus is His first name, but when Paul affixes Christ to Jesus’ name, he is boldly proclaiming that Jesus is the Messiah, because that is what Christ means.


A Jewish person who is not a believer in Jesus would never refer to Him as Christ because that is exactly what they do not believe. Paul continually, throughout his epistles, speaks of Jesus Christ over 80 times.

Team Paul Offers Up Thanksgiving for the Believers in Thessalonica


Choosing the passage to cover is usually fairly simple I try to keep it less than 3 verses, but, now and again that can’t be did. No matter what I do from here to the end of the chapter, there will be a significant amount of disagreement as to where a good stopping point is.


Normally, when I come across a passage which continues, I include an additional verse or so. For this next passage, many translations will continue past v. 4, some of them going to v. 8 (before using a period), some to v. 10 and some to v. 12. We expect this from the LSV translation, but not from the others.


To keep on being grateful, we keep on being obligated to the God always about you (all), brothers, just as worthy keeps on being, for keeps on being the faith of you (all) and keeps on increasing the love with one accord, each (one) of all of you (all) toward one another; so that to them to us in you (all) to keep on boasting in the churches of God for the steadfastness of you (all) and of faith in all to persecutions of you (all) and to the troubles which you (all) keep on bearing with.

(4) Paul boasts of their steadfastness and faith. Evidently the believers in Thessalonica were passing through tough times—the adversity caused their faith to grow and their love for each other to increase. This equation appears to be a norm within the Kingdom of God.

This almost seems to be a contradiction in terms, that they are under an obligation to be grateful. The best way I have seen this translated is by the CGV: We are bound to recognize [our] indebtedness to God always for you (pl), brothers,... Team Paul is indebted to God for the Thessalonians and for what is taking place there in their churches.


Paul and his team move about, from one place to the next, evangelizing, doing some teaching, and then leaving. They do not know what is going to happen to each group of believers. Will they suffer great attacks and persecutions after Team Paul has moved on? Paul is concerned for what happens to the people in each city where he goes, and he is indebted to God for caring for the believers where he has been.


Paul is grateful for these believers in Thessalonica and for their reaction to the pressures which they are under.


In the United States and similar nations of freedom, our lives as believers, to this point (I am writing in 2022) we have been relatively unhindered in our spiritual lives and in the expression of our faith. We have not faced the difficulties which new believers in the Roman Empire faced. However, at the same time, our faith has become flaccid and weak.


At one time, church and daily vacation Bible school and Sunday school for children was pretty much the norm for most families. Prior to that, spiritual discussions in the home were much more common.


We, as a client nation to God, have clearly drifted off course. What should we expect? Discipline, pressures, and tests of faith.

It is proper, fitting, and appropriate for Paul to be grateful for the local church in Thessalonica, because the faith of the believers there continues increasing.


It is clearly a concern for Paul as to what will happen to the believers in a city when he leaves them; and the faith of the Thessalonians keeps on increasing. Paul and company are very grateful for that.

Illustration: When a group of people are suddenly under great pressure, there are several ways that this group can respond. Politicians often respond the same way: they lie, they point fingers, they blame others. We see this for any disaster or difficulty. When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, the politicians could not get on the media fast enough to blame members of the other party. Politicians from both parties, at every level, were to blame for the mess that was in New Orleans (although key to that disaster was the spiritual deficiencies of the people in New Orleans). When it became known that the people of Flint, Michigan were drinking substandard water, the first thing that politicians did was identify members of the opposite party and blame them for the bad water. In both of those disasters, it was nearly impossible to determine where the underlying problems were, for all the blame which was being laid at the doors of politicians from the other party (which accusations filled the media). Whereas, you would think that investigative reporting would have been the order of the day, to uncover what the ultimate problems were, what went wrong, and how this could be avoided again in the future, the news media was filled with reporters taking sides. The rule of thumb for politicians is this: the first politician to point his finger in blame at another politician in the other party—that first politician is probably the person most to blame for whatever has happened.


The believers in Thessalonica are under great pressure; they are facing many difficulties. They are under the exact sort of pressure which would cause person A to blame person B. But this is not the way that they react. They continue with a relaxed mental attitude toward one another, helping one another rather than heaping blame on one another.


We saw in the book of Acts that, even when Paul had to leave a city and move on, God would provide for that city spiritually. For instance, Apollos stepped up as a pastor-teacher in regions where Paul had been. We can only assume that other believers, with this gift, with this knowledge, had begun to take positions of teaching leadership in the churches of Thessalonica.

Although I hate to take in so many verses all at once, most translations continue this as a single sentence.


A token of the righteous justice of God to consider worthy you (all) of the kingdom of the God, on account of which even you (all) keep on experiencing. If indeed [it is] a righteous (thing) with God to recompense the ones oppressing you (all) [with] trouble, and you (all) [are] being pressed upon, a relaxing with us in the appearing of the Lord Jesus from heaven with messengers of power of Him. The persecution which you face today and are able to withstand, that is clear evidence of the righteous justice of God at work within you, so that you can be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, based upon the pressures that you are experiencing. There are those who have pressed hard against you, causing you personal afflictions—and your response to such things is righteous in the sight of God, who will also recompense those lousy SOBs, providing relief for you and us when the Lord Jesus appears from the heavens with his powerful angels. The Lord’s justice is a flame of fire, and it will apply God’s justice to those who have not known God and ot those who keep disobeying the gospel of our Lord Jesus. (6) Wait a minute! If salvation is by grace, where does ‘being worthy’ come in? Well, again we are faced with the paradox of the coexistence of God’s sovereignty and human responsibility. ‘God’s judgment’ = sovereignty; suffering to be considered worthy = responsibility. The gift of life in Christ is indeed free; we don’t deserve it and can’t buy it or earn it. To live for Christ costs everything.

(7) Payday is coming; those who mistreated God’s people aren’t going to like it.

(8) There is a rest for the people of God (Hebrews, chapters 3 and 4).

(9) The syntax allows “in blazing fire” to go either with the angels or the vengeance; it seemed more natural to me to put the phrase with the angels—in that event the ‘revelation’ will be an impressive sight.

(10) It is clearly implied that they could have known God and could have obeyed the Gospel; if they had no way of knowing and never ever heard, ‘vengeance’ would seem to be too strong. So what about the millions of individuals born into cultures where no representative of the Creator has ever gone? Rom. 1:18-25 makes clear that all have the light of creation. All believers are in Christ and so, they are worthy positionally of the kingdom of God. But some believers exhibit spiritual growth, and a great alignment between them and the kingdom of God. Now the experience of the Thessalonians has not been easy. In v. 4, Paul speaks of their pressures, persecutions and afflictions. But this is all a part of it. The first thing is that God might consider them worthy of His calling. So that there is no confusion, as unbelievers, we bring nothing to the table. We heard, believe in Jesus Christ, and so we did. Faith is a nonmeritorious system of perception. Most of what we know, we simply believe to be true. We deserve no credit whatsoever for the things that we believe or don’t believe.


However, here is Paul talking about God deeming the Thessalonians worthy of their calling. This means that post-salvation, Paul is calling for the Thessalonians to grow (which they are obviously doing, based upon this and the previous epistle). Essentially, Team Paul is praying that they are involved in divine good production.


Illustration: As an aside, divine good production is based upon being in fellowship (1John 1:9) and growing spiritually. I have given the illustration before of helping my dad build our house when I am 3 years old. I hammer a piece of scrap wood to the subfloor. I had the tools and the materials, but what I produced did not remain with the house. At best, I had produced something that my father might trip over while working. What was my problem? I lacked the skill set and the understanding of the plans which would have made me worthwhile to have on the job site.


This describes exactly the production of new believers today. Unless you understand the plan of God for your life curing this age of the church, the production of your Christian walk is going to consist of nailing scrap wood to the subfloor of a new build, creating a trip hazard for everyone else.


Praying for the Thessalonians to be worthy of their calling is praying for them to use rebound and to mature by means of the teaching of the Word.

The verb from the previous phrase is carried over to here, that God might fill up every work of faith on their part with power. This would be the enabling power of God the Holy Spirit. I have translated this in such a way for Jesus to be identified as our God and Lord. I believe that is the intent of this phrase.


The fact that we can participate in divine production (and get paid for it in the end) is a grace provision of the plan of God.
