The Uniqueness of God

Written and compiled by Gary Kukis

These studies are designed for believers in Jesus Christ only. If you have exercised faith in Christ, then you are in the right place. If you have not, then you need to heed the words of our Lord, Who said, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten [or, uniquely-born] Son, so that every [one] believing [or, trusting] in Him shall not perish, but shall be have eternal life! For God did not send His Son into the world so that He should judge the world, but so that the world shall be saved through Him. The one believing [or, trusting] in Him is not judged, but the one not believing has already been judged, because he has not believed in the Name of the only-begotten [or, uniquely-born] Son of God.” (John 3:16–18). “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life! No one comes to the Father except through [or, by means of] Me!” (John 14:6).

Every study of the Word of God ought to be preceded by a naming of your sins to God. This restores you to fellowship with God (1John 1:8–10). If we acknowledge our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1John 1:9). If there are people around, you would name these sins silently. If there is no one around, then it does not matter if you name them silently or whether you speak aloud.

I began with the basic few points from Martin Manser’s Dictionary of Bible Themes Scripture Index, which appears to be based upon the NIV Thematic Study Bible; and expanded upon those using other sources.

The ESV; capitalized is used below.

Preface:   There is none other like our God. The God of the Universe is both the God of Israel and the God of those who believe in Jesus Christ. The uniqueness of God is consistently presented in the Old and New Testaments.

1.     Definition: No one and nothing is comparable to the Triune God in His nature or comparable to Him in his character and activity.

2.     There is no God except the Lord. I am the LORD, and there is no other, besides me there is no God; I equip you, though you do not know Me that people may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides Me; I am the LORD, and there is no other. (Isa 45:5-6) To you it was shown, that you might know that the LORD is God; there is no other besides Him. (Deut. 4:35) Let these words of mine, with which I have pleaded before the LORD, be near to the LORD our God day and night, and may he maintain the cause of his servant and the cause of his people Israel, as each day requires, that all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God; there is no other. (1Kings 8:59–60) Yehowah is the personal name for the God of Israel; and this name is often translated Lord. He is the only God; there is no other God. See also Deuteronomy 4:39 2Samuel 7:22-23

3.     God is before all and after all; there is no god prior to God and there will be no god which follows after God. Isa. 43:10 "You are my witnesses," declares the LORD, "and My servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe Me and understand that I am He. Before Me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after Me.” Isa. 44:6–8 Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and His Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: "I am the first and I am the last; besides Me there is no god. Who is like Me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and set it before Me, since I appointed an ancient people. Let them declare what is to come, and what will happen. Fear not, nor be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? And you are My witnesses! Is there a God besides Me? There is no Rock; I know not any."

4.     There is no one like God Isa. 40:18 To whom then will you liken God, or what likeness compare with him? See also Isa. 40:25–26 Psalm 89:6-8 Ex 8:10 2Samuel 7:22-23

5.     God is unique in that no one compares to Him. Psalm 89:6–8 For who in the skies can be compared to the LORD? Who among the heavenly beings is like the LORD, a God greatly to be feared in the council of the holy ones, and awesome above all who are around him? O LORD God of hosts, who is mighty as you are, O LORD, with your faithfulness all around you?

6.     God is over all and above all. 2Samuel 7:22 1Chronicles 29:11

7.     God is unique as the Triune God—as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Triune God has no other equal in reality or even in religion or mythology. God is One in essence, purpose and character; yet He is 3 in person. This concept (and reality) is found nowhere else. Even more fascinating is, the Trinity in the Old Testament can be seen and understood from the New Testament standpoint. However, the Jews did not themselves believe in a Trinity. "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.” (Deut. 6:4) So we can easily understand and identify the Trinity in the Old Testament, once we know that there is a Trinity from the new. See the Doctrine of the Trinity in the Old Testament (HTML) (PDF) (WPD). Also Eph. 4:6 1Tim. 2:5

8.     God alone stands outside nature as its Creator. Space, matter, time and all beings are created by him. Isa. 45:18 For thus says the LORD, Who created the heavens (He is God!), who formed the earth and made it (he established it; He did not create it empty, He formed it to be inhabited!): "I am the LORD, and there is no other.” See also Deut. 4:35 32:3 1Ki 8:60 Psalm 24:1–2 83:18 86:10 95:4–5 Isa 43:10-11 44:6-8 1Cor. 8:4-6 Eph 4:6 1Ti 2:5

9.     There is no one like God in His creative power. John 1:3 All things were made through Him, and without Him was not any thing made that was made. Neh. 9:6 "You are the LORD, You alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them and You preserve all of them and the host of heaven worships You.” Isa 40:25-26 See also Acts 14:15 Col 1:16 Rev 4:11

10.   There is no one like God in His mighty acts. Psalm 86:10 For You are great and do wondrous things; You alone are God. See also Psalm 135:5-6

11.   There is no one like God in His sovereignty Psalm 83:17–18 Let them be put to shame and dismayed forever; let them perish in disgrace, that they may know that you alone, whose name is the LORD, are the Most High over all the earth. 1Chron 29:11 Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and You are exalted as head above all. See also Zech. 14:9 See also Deut 4:39 1Tim. 1:17

12.   God is unique in His control of the earth and all things in the earth. Ex. 9:29 Moses said to him, "As soon as I have gone out of the city, I will stretch out my hands to the LORD. The thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail, so that you may know that the earth is the LORD's.” See Deut. 10:14

13.   There is no one like God in His character and glory Ex 15:11 See also 2Sa 7:22; 1Ch 29:11

14.   There is no one like God in His ability to save. Isa. 43:11 “I, I am the LORD, and besides Me there is no savior.” Deut. 33:26 See also Isa 45:20-22 Jer 10:5-6

15.   God is unique in His covenantal love. 1Kings 8:23 2Sam. 7:22-23 1Chron. 17:20-21

16.   God is above all angelic beings. Ex. 15:11 "Who is like You, O LORD, among the gods? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? 1Kings 8:23 Psalm 135:5-6

17.   God is unique in His prophetic utterances. Ex. 8:9–10 Moses said to Pharaoh, "Be pleased to command me when I am to plead for you and for your servants and for your people, that the frogs be cut off from you and your houses and be left only in the Nile." And he said, "Tomorrow." Moses said, "Be it as you say, so that you may know that there is no one like the LORD our God.” Also see Ex. 9:14

18.   The implications of God’s uniqueness regarding worship and idolatry:

        1)     God alone is to be worshipped. Isa. 45:20 "Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, you survivors of the nations! They have no knowledge who carry about their wooden idols, and keep on praying to a god that cannot save. Ex 20:2-3 Deut. 5:6-7 See also Ex 23:13,24 Lev 19:4 Deut. 6:13-14 2Kings 17:35

        2)     Idolatry is empty and worthless 1Cor. 8:4–6 Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that "an idol has no real existence," and that "there is no God but one." For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords"— yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through Whom are all things and through whom we exist. John 2:8 See also Deut. 4:28 Isa 44:18-20 Isa 45:20 Jer. 10:5–6 Hab 2:18

        3)     Ancient idols are meaningless; they are the work of man’s hands. Habbakuk 2:18 "What profit is an idol when its maker has shaped it, a metal image, a teacher of lies? For its maker trusts in his own creation when he makes speechless idols! See also Jonah 2:8 Deuteronomy 4:28 Isaiah 44:18-20 Isaiah 45:20.

19.   God is unique insofar as, all nations will come and worship Him. Psalm 86:8–9 There is none like You among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like Yours. All the nations You have made shall come and worship before You, O Lord, and shall glorify Your name. Also Psalm 22:27, 29 66:4 102:15 Isa. 2:2–4

and the Bible is unique (Middletown Bible Church) (Dr. John Weldon) (Josh McDowell Ministries) (Mark Copeland)
